THE St Helens Table Tennis League played its final set last season due to shortage of players, but long-term steps are being taken towards its future revival.

For former stalwart Brian Wearden has been instrumental in forming the St Helens Junior Table Tennis Club, which will function at Sutton Cricket Club, Sutton Leisure Centre and Sutton High School.

The scheme had its launch at the school, when former European champion John Hilton, Italian star Fabio Mantegazza and English expert Phil Bowen presented a taster session to pupils.

Said chairman Mr Wearden: "You could say starting at grass roots level is like a phoenix rising from the ashes, and one-time league players Fred Ackers and Lol Morris have thrown their weight behind the new venture.

"The club already has 20 members, and we are hopeful of obtaining grant aid to buy tables and equipment and, as a start, we feel that it is a positive move to reach out to youngsters at Sutton High School."

Practice sessions are held at Sutton Cricket Club on Fridays from 7 to 9pm, and on Sundays at Sutton Leisure Centre from 11am to 1pm.
