POLICE have warned a record-breaking scooter rider that if he attempts his next planned daredevil feat he will be nicked!

Matheu Parry (pictured) has already propelled himself into the record books twice for his exploits on a self-propelled scooter but his third attempt will be his most dangerous yet.

The 28-year-old is planning to thunder down one of East Lancashire's steepest roads, reaching over 70mph, in order to smash the current record held by one Guerg Zackman.

But Burnley police have told him that if he goes ahead without their permission they will have no choice but to arrest him for speeding because the proposed venue -- Skipton Old Road -- is a public highway with a speed limit of 60mph

Sergeant Andrew Moore, events and planning officer at Burnley, who was approached by Matheu for advice, said: "This attempt contravenes several regulations. For example, his vehicle does not comply with legislation for use on a public highway. We have not said 'no' but until we have more details we do not recommend that he goes ahead. If he does, he could be arrested if he breaks the speed limit."

Matheu, who is 28 and from Colne, is hoping this latest attempt will be his third record. The Guinness Book of Records recognises him as having travelled the furthest on a scooter when he rode 935 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats. This summer he broke his own record for the longest distance travelled on a scooter within 24 hours, when he notched up 648 laps of the Seedhill athletics track, Nelson, or 161 miles. But this latest attempt is his biggest challenge.

"This is the most dangerous and certainly the nuttiest one yet," admitted Matheu, a self-confessed eccentric. "I've definitely begun to question my own sanity and if I come off the scooter at that speed it will be a disaster. I'm going to have to get motorbike leathers for this one. They might slow me up but it'll be worth it."

Safety is also a major concern for the police. Sergeant Moore said: "That stretch of road is busy and if a juggernaut is on the road he will have no chance. If we receive his plans in writing maybe we could advise him to use a private road."

But daredevil Matheu is adamant that Skipton Old Road will be the venue a week today.

"I'm just going to go for it. When I did Land's End to John O'Groats I didn't get police help," he said. "If they arrest me that will be another record -- the first person to be arrested for speeding on a scooter!"
