THE headteacher of one of East Lancashire's independent schools has urged parents to stand up to "blackmail" by their children.

They were also warned of the "frightening" amount of pornography and violence facing today's youngsters.

In the annual speech at Oakhill College in Whalley which was also attended by school patron Lord David Alton, principal Philip Mahon asked parents to consider whether their children are growing up too quickly. During a speech in which he congratulated staff and pupils on their achievements, he warned of the "frightening amount of violent and pornographic material readily available and waiting to warp the minds of the young."

Mr Mahon said: "Are they being exposed to things they cannot possibly have the maturity or experience to make judgements about. They are easy targets for the marketing men who can persuade them to part with available cash which is perhaps too often given by parents wishing to please."

He advised parents to stand firm against the "blackmail" of children claiming "all my friends are going," "everyone's got one," "everyone else is staying much later" and "you just don't understand." He said: "I assure you, you do understand and I urge you to say no. Your reward will be a loving and ever-grateful child in later life." Mr Mahon said he realised the comments would not make him popular with pupils, but added: "They may be grateful for the message when it becomes their turn to bring up children."

He said he thought it was now more difficult for parents because "the guidance of God and the church" had been removed from many people's lives, but added that he was particularly pleased that many non-Catholic parents sent their children to the Catholic college.
