WHY is Jack Straw's get-tough-on-crime policy not working?
In the area between Preston New Road and King Street, Blackburn, there have been 14 daylight muggings this year.
Using alcohol addiction or drugs as an excuse for anti social behaviour when before the courts is pathetic.
As far as I am concerned both of the above are self inflicted.
The statistics state that crime is on the decrease.
This may be true with minor crimes.
But violent crimes against the person are on the increase and the magistrates and judges keep giving out laughable sentences.
No wonder so many criminals re-offend. Getting a slap on the wrist is no deterrent.
It is a sad indictment of our society when children have to be careful when they go out to play, when the elderly and vulnerable are afraid to walk down the street in broad daylight and householders keep their fingers crossed that when they return their houses and contents are intact.
Mr Straw should show us he means what he says by removing the velvet glove and stamping down hard on the criminal element that is making so many people's lives a misery.
R CUTTING (Mr), Summerville Walk, Blackburn.
