FORMER Leigh RL legend Ted Brophy has died at his home in South Africa, aged 69.
The former Springbok forward is best remembered for the night he dived into the canal at Leigh and saved the life of Great Britain and St Helens star Dick Huddart.
Brophy received a bravery award after rescuing Huddart whose van had toppled into the water as he tried to get it started.
Brophy made 70 appearances for Leigh before suddenly quitting and sailing home from Southampton.
Bill Robinson, chairman of Leigh Past Players Association and a former team-mate of Brophy's said: "Lots of fans will be sad to here of Ted's death. He was well thought of in the town."
