PROPOSALS to install phone masts on the roof of a building in Burnley town centre have sparked a strike threat from staff working in the building.

Employees at the Benefits Agency, at Brun House, Kingsway, claim radiation from the three BT masts, proposed by London-based Trillium, could endanger their health.

They say they will protest outside the workplace every Saturday, when work is due to take place, but this weekend's planned protest was called off at the last minute when Trillium agreed to meet staff.

Rachel Barrowclough, branch secretary of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Union, said: "We had a meeting with them on Friday and they told us that they were not going to go ahead with the work this weekend o we called off our protest.

"They said they would arrange a meeting with us this week so we told staff what had happened.

"We are still not happy with the situation. Once work has started we will think again about protesting."

Staff have met with other local businesses, the Inland Revenue Office, also in Kingsway, two children's nurseries and Sainsbury's, who have also supported their campaign.
