AN ATTACKER has left a village community in fear after a series of street robberies which left one 90-year-old victim with a broken hip.

Three pensioners were attacked in Pleasington, on the outskirts of Blackburn, over the weekend and police believe one man could be responsible for all the crimes.

They are now appealing for witnesses to try to catch the attacker before he strikes again.

In the most brutal of the attacks 90-year-old Eileen Richardson was pushed to the ground after getting off a bus near her home in Old Hall Lane at about 4pm on Saturday. The attacker approached her from behind and, after a short struggle, grabbed her handbag, containing a box of chocolates and cash, and ran off.

Miss Richardson was left with a fractured hip and facial injuries and was taken to Blackburn Infirmary where she underwent surgery for the fracture. Her condition today was described as "comfortable."

Edna Arnold, vice-chairman of Pleasington Parish Council, said: "I am absolutely appalled by what is going on these days. This is inexcusable.

"Pleasington is a lovely little village and the last place on earth you would expect something like this to happen.

"It is such a shame because apart from anything else Eileen will now be a prisoner in her own home, afraid to step out of her front door."

Parish priest Father Kevin Kenny added: "I am quite horrified by this. Eileen is one of the best-loved characters in the village. I am absolutely appalled and can hardly believe it."

No description of the attacker was given but police are asking for anyone who saw anybody acting suspiciously to call them on 01254 51212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
