Radcliffe Borough 0, Accrington Stanley 3

STANLEY progressed through to the third round of the FA Umbro Trophy largely thanks to a brace of goals from Russell Payne in a superb second half performance.

It was Radcliffe who had the better of the earlier exchanges and in the 27 minute, former Manchester United player Mark Dempsey's free kick was headed on by Dave Collins but goalkeeper Jamie Speare saved.

But it was Accrington who went ahead on 36 minutes. Mark Patterson's corner was met by a fierce header by Robbie Williams who netted his first goal for the club.

Three minutes later Patterson almost added a second goal with a snap shot on the turn that goalkeeper Danny Hurst saved well.

Stanley began to take control of the game after the break and it came as no surprise when they went further ahead in the 71 minute. Patterson sent over a corner which was pulled back by Jay Flannery to Payne who hooked the ball into the net from close range.

Two minutes later a superb three man move almost created a third goal, substitute, Payne's pinpoint cross was met by former Radcliffe striker Paul Mullin whose fierce header went narrowly wide.

Ten minutes from time substitute Paddi Wilson's goalbound effort was denied by Hurst's legs.

Stanley clinched victory on 86 minutes when Flannery found Mullin whose strong run took him past two defenders and he unselfishly laid the ball off for Payne who unleashed a left foot 15 yard shot into the net.
