MOTORISTS could be asked to curb their speed on Bury's inner relief road, with a proposal to introduce cycle lanes on Peel Way.
The speed limit could be cut from 40 to 30 mph on Peel Way and adjoining town centre roads, should the plan go ahead.
A decision will be taken by councillors at a meeting of the highways and traffic management committee tonight (Tues 5 Dec 5).
The new limit is proposed for Peel Way, Jubilee Way and Bolton Street.
In addition to making the routes safe for cyclists, the plan to reduce speed is also intended to improve the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
Statistics report high casualty rates on the three roads and the aim is to meet government targets for accident reduction.
Calls for a reduction in the speed limit on Peel Way have also been made by Bury's Cycling Forum.
The plans for cycle routes have been made as part of Bury's cycling strategy, aimed at putting cycle lanes on major traffic routes across the borough.
The new routes will link with existing and proposed cycle lanes.
