The 20-year-old Sheffield United striker is on loan to the Shakers for a month with a view to staying all season.
However, his first taste of Second Division action was Bury's 4-1 defeat at Bristol City - hardly the best start to his Gigg Lane career.
"It was a difficult game for Andy," said Shakers boss Andy Preece. "He spent most of the game defending.
"But it's only early and we'll see more of him in the coming weeks I'm sure."
As for Smith himself he is itching to open his goal tally for his new club.
"I felt okay at Bristol but I think I need a few more games to get a bit sharper," he said.
"I haven't started many games for Sheffield so now I'm here I want to take my opportunity and get a goal or two.
"The boss told me that if I got a chance to shoot to have a crack but I didn't get that many opportunities.
"Everyone at the club has been great made me feel really welcome, I had a choice of going to Chesterfield but I wanted to come here and hopefully I can do a job for Bury." By PHIL THORP Handy Andy! Andy Smith . . . first game
