THE spectacular backdrop of an illuminated Clitheroe Castle will provide a unique setting for a special nativity performance to mark the millennium.
The nativity will feature local amateur actors in elaborate costumes, real horses, donkeys and sheep, an elevated angel and a star suspended above the historic castle.
The performances will begin with a procession from the castle gates to the bandstand area where the story of the nativity will be told through carol singing.
One of the organisers, Mr Roger Hirst, said: "The whole performance will last about 30 minutes and we are hoping to repeat it on three nights between December 18 and 23 -- depending on the weather.
"It will be a very professionally-produced event in a unique setting with a unique illumination of the castle as a backdrop.
"We would like everyone to come along to at least one of the performances.
"This is Clitheroe's interpretation of a major historical event and everyone, no matter what religion or creed they are, will be welcome to join us in our millennium celebration.
"A lot of people have worked very hard on this event, Clitheroe Town Council has financed it, local farmers have provided livestock, amateur actors have provided their theatrical services and renowned producer Margaret Smith is taking charge of the whole event.
"Each performance should be a spectacular event in itself and well worth a visit."
The performances are free although donations will be gratefully received and any funds raised will be given to the hospice appeal.
The production has been scheduled to take place on three nights out of six, dependent on the weather and on each occasion people are asked to assemble at the castle gates at 7pm.
