IF Councillors Dave Smith and Dave Hollings (Letters, December 5) think that the British people are content with the extra taxes they have had to pay after three-and-a-half years of a Labour Government, then they are very much mistaken.

Coun Smith should beware of reading too much in the opinion polls, as I am sure he recalls vividly the 1992 General Election, when Labour thought they were on course to win power and it ended in tears for them.

Whenever the General Election comes, Conservatives will make sure that the stealth taxes of this government will be one of the major issues.

Councillor D PEARSON, Rawstorne Street, Blackburn.
