I SEE that a proposal for a minimum speed limit for pedestrians on Oxford Street in London is to be considered in order to avoid congestion.
Why not go the whole hog and apply this emotive measure to Broadway in Accrington?
We could have a traffic warden at both ends with an oil-can for the wheelchairs and zimmer frames.
All free-standing pedestrians who appear a bit wobbly could be equipped with compulsory skates or scooters.
I suggest a limit of a minimum of four miles per hour down the 'brew' from Swinton Insurance, but dropping to three miles per hour coming up 't-bonk' from the Town Hall.
Wardens would be supplied with speed cameras and fixed penalty points imposed on deliberate dawdlers.
'Camping' should be prohibited and seats removed to discourage time-wasters.
The market would buzz with parents sending the kids in order to keep the traffic flowing. It won't be stop-me-and-buy-one, but catch-me-and-I'll-have-one.
FRANCIS CROSS (Mr), Royds Street, Accrington.
