A NEWTON woman proved she is no landlubber after taking control of the 11,000-ton cruise liner, the Black Prince.
Margaret Hamilton, who lives in Haydock Park Gardens, was enjoying a 14-day holiday cruise on the Norwegian-based Fred Olsen liner, with her husband Alec, when she was invited to take the helm. But instead of the expected wheel, she found herself grasping a metal rod just seven inches long -- the smallest tiller of any ocean-going vessel in the world.
Afterwards, Margaret, who visited Cadiz, Casablanca, Lanzarote and Madeira as part of the cruise, said: "I could hardly believe that this tiny piece of equipment was all you needed to steer such a huge ship and you could do it with just one finger.
"It was fascinating to think that this ship was under my control, even if it was just for a few moments."
