AS I write, we enter a new year in Blackburn, which failed to get city status by a mile, up to our knees in uncollected rubbish.
I find it disgusting that despite the fact the past week is the busiest of the year for rubbish, no attempt has been made to clear the backlog. The streets are an absolute disgrace.
On a recent visit to Stockholm, it was amazing to see how clean everything was kept -- no sweet wrappers, drink cans or cigarette ends on the streets.
Every street is swept every week and the street cleaner also has to sign a board on a lamp post in the street to say it has been done.
The people are aware how lucky they are to have such a nice city, so they, too, are happy to do their bit and keep the place tidy.
One other thing is Stockholm's public waste bins outnumber those in my home town by at least 25 to 1.
Don't let the council fob us off with excuses. Take a look at Hyndburn and Burnley this week -- they all had the bins emptied.
Come on, Blackburn Council, make an effort. Start by providing more street bins, recycling centres and waste disposal centres. And take some advice -- spend a few quid to go and see how the Swedes have sorted it.
A J PARKER, Pritchard Street, Blackburn.
