MORE people than ever have been protected against flu this winter.
This year, for the first time, flu vaccinations are available free to everyone 65 years or older and St Helens and Knowsley Health Authority has already surpassed the government's target of vaccinating at least 60 per cent of this age group.
Consultant in communicable disease, Dr Basil Wiratunga, said: "This is great news for the local health services and we are grateful for all the hard work by GPs, practice nurses and others over the last few months.
"Flu is a potential killer for older people and other at-risk groups. With this vaccination programme, we have protected thousands of people and have hopefully eased the pressure placed on health services by flu outbreaks each year."
St Helens & Knowsley Health Authority is urging anyone over 65 and other at-risk groups who have not yet had the flu jab to make an appointment with their family doctor as soon as possible.
You should ask about having a flu vaccination if:
You are 65 years or older.
You are any age but suffer from a chronic heart or chest complaint, including asthma, chronic kidney disease or diabetes.
You have lowered immunity due to a disease, or treatment such as steroid medication or cancer treatment.
If you live in an old people's home or a nursing home.
