FIREFIGHTERS have warned children of the danger of playing with matches or lighters after a youngster set fire to her bedroom badly damaging the rest of the house.

Blackburn's leading firefighter John Hampson warned parents not to leave the items lying around.

His message comes after a six-year-old girl set fire to her bedroom after playing with a lighter.

Firefighters were called to the house in Rosewood Avenue, Roe Lee, Blackburn, shortly before 9.20am yesterday.

Paper had set fire to the bed which had started the bedroom blaze gutting the room. Severe damage was caused to the rest of the upstairs of the house.

The girl suffered singed hair although she did not require hospital treatment.

Mr Hampson said: "This example emphasis the danger of children playing with matches. Parents should also beware."
