FYLDE doctors are crossing their fingers and hoping current low flu levels will continue, thanks to the vaccine which is available.
Consultant for public health, Dr Sohail Ashraf, said: "The rates of influenza across the North West are quite low at the moment and are certainly nowhere near the epidemic proportions previously seen.
"But we do usually see the rates shoot up significantly in January, so we would like to remind people there is still a safe, effective flu vaccine available and it's free for people aged over 65 or those with chronic heart, lung or renal problems."
Flu symptoms to watch out for are:
A sudden onset of illness
Chills and shivers
Weakness
Redness of nose and throat
Cough
Fever
Muscle pain
Close contact with a flu sufferer
If you find yourself suffering from four or more of these symptoms it's possibly flu and not just a cold and Dr Ashraf advises "paracetamol, plenty of fluids and rest. If severe chest symptoms and persistent vomiting occur contact your GP."
Blackpool Victoria Hospital also reports no problems with flu cases this year but a slight increase in trauma cases due to the icy weather.
