BURNLEY will not dive into the transfer market and make any panic buys in a bid to turn things round at Turf Moor.

Clarets boss Stan Ternent is continuing to scour the market and has identified players that he wants to bolster a squad which has hit a sticky patch with five straight defeats.

But he is prepared to sit and wait for the right deals to come off rather than settle for second best and bring in new faces for the sake of it.

He said: "If the players we wanted became available and we had the money then okay.

"If the opportunity presents itself then we would do it. But until that player becomes available and until that happens and it's good for Burnley Football Club we will scramble through."

And Ternent's message is echoed by chairman Barry Kilby, who highlighted the Ian Moore deal as the classic case for buying at the right terms.

"They were asking for £2 million for Ian Moore at one stage. We could have moved 10 weeks earlier and paid that," he said.

However, the chairman stressed that the policy remains to strengthen the Clarets squad when and wherever possible.

"We have a budget and there are players we are looking for. But we can't make horrendous mistakes with money. We have to be patient and land players at a price we are prepared to pay and that takes patience. And if it's not right, it's not right.

"At a club like ours where cash is a precious resource you have to spend wisely. "We have players we have identified and targets we are going for if they become available."

Ternent clearly has some cash to spend and while it's far from a bottomless pit the situation will improve in time as Burnley's commercial income grows and a lucrative new television deal kicks in next season.

"We are in our infancy financially and we have to maintain a First Division status or it's back to Third and Fourth Division stuff. Financially it's dead important that we stay in the division," added the manager, who has called for the supporters to get behind the team to make sure that happens.

Despite Burnley's current run survival shouldn't be an issue and Ternent is adamant that even with the squad currently at his disposal the Clarets won't get sucked into a relegation dog-fight.

With a full hand to choose from Burnley are still more likely to be concerned with the top half of the table and there is light at the end of the tunnel on the injury and suspension front.

The Clarets were almost down to the bare bones for Monday's game against Wolves but Kevin Ball looks set to be the only absentee for Saturday's FA Cup clash with Scunthorpe. Steve Davis is free from suspension and expected to shake off a minor knee problem while long-term injury victims Glen Little and Lee Briscoe are poised to return to the squad.

And Paul Cook will also offer an extra option in midfield after sitting out a one-match ban.
