YOUNG hair stylists were encouraged to be a cut above the rest during an open day at Blackburn College.
The hairdressing and beauty event was aimed at giving young people an insight into the range of training and careers on offer to hairdressers in East Lancashire. The day showcased a number of young people who are currently training their way to the top via work-based training and modern apprenticeships.
One of those who put her hairdressing talents to the test was 18-year-old Jacqueline Hull. The former pupil of St Augustine's RC High School, Billington, is on an ELTEC foundation modern apprenticeship programme which trains her to NVQ level 2 in hairdressing.
Jacqueline works at the Escape salon in Wilpshire, Blackburn. "It's so much more beneficial to work in a salon," she said. "This way I'm getting all the hands-on experience I need, as well as training with Blackburn College, and a wage."
Marie Hopson, 17, is following the same route. Marie is developing her hairdressing skills at the Village Hair Shop, Lower Darwen. "I'm learning new skills all the time and I know that this was the best choice for me," she said. Both girls are hoping to develop their skills further on the advanced modern apprenticeship after completing the foundation programme.
