A TEAM of pupils from a Lytham school are showing that their business skills will not leave them short of a bob or two in the future.

Lower sixth form students at King Edward VII and Queen Mary school formed their own company "BOB", or Big On Business, to take part in the national Young Enterprise Scheme.

And joint managing directors Greg Coulter and Carla Webster are delighted with the company's first three months of trading.

Although the figures are yet to be totted up, it looks like BOB's new line in calendars and Christmas cards should see that their new year is very happy. This success could bring smiles to the faces of plenty of pupils at the school, too, as many of them have taken out shares which could pay good dividends when the trading is wrapped up at the end of the school year.

"We have a very enthusiastic team of students," said MD Greg.

"They are all carrying out their roles very effectively.

"As our first project we designed, produced and sold T-shirts for the school production of Oliver.

"Our sales team, under the leadership of Lindsay Cooper and Chris Roberts, were also aiming to achieve good sales at Christmas with personalised calendars and a selection of specially designed Christmas cards."

Financial director Ankur Khandelwal feels that one of the trickiest problems is making sure there is communication between all 34 members of BOB.

"Everyone is very keen to do their job well," he said.

"We all have to be careful not to get carried away by our success.

"My job is to ensure all the finances of the company are recorded carefully.

"Many people at the school bought shares in the company in September, and if we make good profits we hope to pay a dividend when the company finally winds up in May."

Young Enterprise is a national scheme in which thousands of schools participate, each forming their own company which must design, manufacture and sell a variety of individual products with the help of advisers from local industry.
