Accrington Stanley outclassed Unibond First Division side Winsford United in the first game of the new year winning 6-0 in the Unibond Challenge Cup Group five match.

Midfielder Mark Brennan opening the scoring in the fourth minute before the Winsford goalkeeper Karl Walton was sent off six minutes later for handling the ball outside the penalty area.

Substitute goalkeeper Marcus Hawkins came on for full back Neil Morley but couldn't keep defend the Stanley onslaught.

Simon Carden doubled the score after 20 minutes when he drove the ball past Hawkins following a goalmouth scramble. The third goal came on 27 minutes after Brennan was fouled 20 yards from goal.

Left back Steve Hollis' direct free kick was fired low into the net off keeper Hawkins.

The 32nd minute saw fit-again striker Gary Williams get the fourth.

After the break Paul Mullin made it five when he stole in behind the defence to latch on to a diagonal through ball and chip Hawkins from 18 yards.

Stanley wide man Russell Payne completed the scoring on 81 minutes when he went on a run from the halfway line outpacing three defenders before coolly slotting the ball past Hawkins from just inside the box.

Boss John Coleman said: "Their goalkeeper getting sent off was a shame because we would have won by that many even of the keeper hadn't been sent off.

"We played some good football and and we punished them which is something we haven't been doing to teams recently."

Accrington Stanley Reserves play Kelbrook at the Crown Ground this Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
