THE Centurions are likely to come up against the top amateur side in the country when they start their Silk Cut Challenge Cup campaign later this month.

If, as expected, West Hull beat Wakefield side Eastmoor Dragons in tomorrow's delayed second round tie, then the crack Humberside outfit will visit Hilton Park in the third round on January 28.

West Hull have a fearsome reputation in the amateur ranks. They have won the National Conference Premier Division title for the last two years and this season are well on course to complete a unique hat-trick. They are currently second in the table, having lost just one game.

Their finest hour was probably back in 1996 when they knocked out two pro clubs and actually reached the last 16 of the competition. They beat Highfield 35-20 away and York 10-6 at home before eventually going out to Wakefield in the fifth round. Their side is stacked full of current BARLA internationals and are coached by ex-Hull scrum-half and former assistant coach at the Boulevard, Phil Windley.

But local amateur side Leigh Miners have an even tougher job on their hands. They must visit last season's NFP Grand Final winners Dewsbury.
