A JUDGE has warned young nightclubbers they are being watched when they leave in the early hours and says he hopes CCTV cameras will help stamp out violence on the streets.
Judge Raymond Bennett made his comments after he jailed two men for their parts in a 'pack attack' outside Churchills bar, Accrington and said what he had seen on the video of the fracas played to Burnley Crown Court was 'quite horrific.'
He said the recording demonstrated graphically and dreadfully how some young people behaved when they came out of clubs and he hoped in due course CCTV and the knowledge that it was there would deter people from getting into trouble.
The judge went on: "There is too much violence on our streets and the message must go out that if people are caught taking part, there has to be a custodial sentence."
Judge Bennett told father-to-be Jason Bancroft, 20, he had been 'hell bent' on hitting out at anybody he could that night and when victim Daniel Thornton was being attacked by other people, he had joined in. Bancroft, of John Street, Clayton-le-Moors, admitted affray and assault causing actual bodily harm and was sent to detention for two years. Gareth Jones, 21, of Sherwood Road, Blackburn, was sent to prison for six months, after the judge said he delievered a 'cowardly kick' from behind, which brought Mr Thornton down.
John Chaplin, prosecuting, said Bancroft had been tripping people up and making a nuisance of himself outside the club and was seen on CCTV using violence almost in a random way.
Daniel Thornton became concerned about repercussions when a female friend confronted the defendant, went to get a wheel brace from his car and caught somebody on the head with it. He felt a blow, managed to get away, dropped the brace and was chased by a crowd as he did so.
He was then set aboutupon by a group of people and was punched and kicked by several men as he lay on the floor. One was Jones and Bancroft then caught the group up and joined in the assault.
Mr Thornton suffered a broken jaw, tenderness and grazing. The defendants were both later arrested as a result of the video recording.
