MORE than 25 suspected drug dealers have been arrested following a dawn raid on a number of addresses in Preston.

More than 300 officers, drawn from each of Lancashire's six divisions, took part in the early morning swoop codenamed 'Operation Tetley'.

Police served warrants at 22 addresses across the town and those arrested will be questioned regarding selling class A drugs -- in particular heroin and cocaine.

Specialist officers, including search teams, dog handlers and family protection officers, were involved in the raid at around 6am on Tuesday (January 9).

Chief superintendent Bernard Lawson said the operation had been an intelligence-led raid in direct response to listening to the voice of the community.

He said: "We were sent a very clear message that they did not want a disruptive criminal minority who illegally deal drugs to live among them.

"We want to put fear into the hearts of the drug dealers, not the communities they infect."

Operation Tetley follows months of planning and evidence gathering on alleged drug dealing across the town.

Now, Preston Borough Council has served several of those arrested with a notice of intention to seek possession of their properties. Some could face eviction from their homes if they are found to have breached the conditions of their tenancies by using the premises for dealing.

Mr Lawson added: "The majority of those who live in this town are decent people who tell us time and again they do not welcome drugs and dealers in their communities.

"This operation marks the start of a sustained attack upon crime and the causes of crime in the area."

Council leader Ian Hall added: "We are determined to drive out drugs and the people that peddle their misery. I'm pleased the operation has been a success."
