SAINSBURY's have given an assurance that the listed 1930s facade at the former Prestige factory will form a major part of their new store.

Work on the new development in Colne Road, Burnley, is on schedule with the opening planned for this summer with the creation of 400 jobs.

The supermarket chain is asking Burnley Council's development control and highways committee tonight, thursday, to agree to minor changes to one of the side walls of the facade.

Burnley Civic Trust is objecting to any changes even though the relevant area will not be in public view.

A Sainsbury's spokesman said: "Works to the main facade are set for completion by October as we have negotiated an option allowing us to continue with work on the facade past the earlier opening of the store.

"This will ensure that this well-loved monument of Burnley's industrial heritage is carefully maintained and that it receives the attention it deserves."

The wings of the facade would be substantially retained with minor alterations already approved.

Construction work had revealed serious structural flaws in part of the side wall. The spokesman added: "We have invested a great deal of time and effort into the regeneration of the listed works and hope the council approves the minor amendment to a part of the wall which will not be visible to the public."

Planning officer recommend approval of changes to the side wall which involve the removal of one window and the construction of a fire exit door.
