A LANCASTER animal sanctuary claims this Christmas has been the worst on record for abandoned animals.
Staff at Animal Care on Blea Tarn Road have been horrified at the sheer number of dogs, cats and other animals abandoned over the holiday period.
The worst case involved a puppy rescued from a dustbin which had been burnt and drowned.
Although in a critical condition, the six week old puppy - nick named Christie - has made a great recovery and is living with a vet.
But other animals have not been so fortunate and there are 40 dogs awaiting new homes.
"It's never been as bad as this. It's the worst Christmas on record," said manager at Animal Care, Val Harwood.
"We've reached the stage where our dogs are having to share kennels and there's even one dog who's living in the reception. We're at bursting point. And what's about to make the situation worse is the closure of the bridge over the motorway which will make it very difficult for people to reach us."
Work on the bridge will start on January 15 for 11 weeks and their will be a four mile detour via Halton to reach Blea Tarn Road.
"It couldn't have come at a worse time," added Val. "We've got 30 dogs and 10 puppies to house. We've also got cats, kittens, rabbits and rodents to find homes for. We just hope people won't be put off by the bridge closure. There will still be pedestrian access so people will be able to park near to the bridge and walk over to see us."
