AN OBE has been awarded to an animal lover who was born and raised in Hindley. Fred Comber, 65, who now lives in Horsham was recognised in the Queen's New Year Awards.
He spent 33 years serving the RSPCA where he worked his way up to the rank of Chief Superintendent and he has also trained RSPCA inspectors in other countries.
Also named in the honours list was Patrick Burke who was brought up in Lowton. Patrick, who attended St Joseph's RC School before moving on to Wigan, has been awarded an MBE. He has spent 30 years as a field support manager at the St Helen's Employment Service.
