A HEADLINE history of Burnley in the 20th Century was given to members of the Burnley and District Historical Society by treasurer Brian Hall at the annual Walter Bennett memorial lecture at the New Church Centre, Briercliffe Road.
Mr Bennett was founder of the society and wrote History of Burnley. Society president, Mayor Coun Rafique Malik, attended the lecture.
The meeting coincided with the publication of Retrospect, volume 18 of the society journal, priced £1.50 and available at Burnley Central Library. It looks at the life of local businessman and registrar Thomas Sutcliffe (1788-1871), the Lancashire cotton strike of 1878, Sunny Bank School memories, Burnley Literary and Scientific Society in 1900 and Burnley in the 20th Century.
