DARWEN Technical School has been an important part of the town's history for more than 100 years. Now after a six and a half year battle, the campaign to save 'The Old Tech' is finally over.
The Darwen Against Demolition action group fought long and hard to secure a future for this majestic building.
Lancashire County Council, a demolition notice, arson and vandalism did not deter the campaign and now the building is being refurbished, much to the delight of all the campaigners.
Local councillor Derek Brindle and Emily Banks have been involved with the scheme from day one. They have kept Darwen people up to date on what's happening. Builders are now at work and the school seems to be coming alive.
I eagerly await the day when the building is finally finished.
Finally, lets give credit where credit is due -- to the 7,500 Darreners who signed the petition, the local press and radio, the Civic Society (locally and nationally,) the Victorian Society and to the new owners, Berbury International.
DAVID CADWALLENDER (Mr), Leeward Close, Lower Darwen.
