BRUSHING up management skills is an ideal way to stay ahead of the rest, according to East Lancashire's first NVQ5 management graduate from the world of hairdressing.
Phillip Kenyon, whose Plus Two family-owned group of hair salons is based in Accrington and Haslingden, signed up for ELTEC's NVQ5 management scheme when he reached "a crossroads" in his business life.
"I've gained many professional qualifications and, as a family, we have looked at the hair and beauty business from all angles and in a variety of locations," explained Phillip, a 33-year-old father of two.
"I realised that to go forwards I had to develop my management skills, preferably to a very high level.
"A dry, academic approach was not attractive but the NVQ5 programme is based on your day-to-day experiences as a manager. It was hard work but it was the best and most effective way to build my management expertise at the same time as running a business and enjoying my home life.
"It broadened my horizons by giving me new ideas and methods to apply. As a result I have looked at our business plan and begun introducing innovations and improvements to keep us in front of the competition."
Among the business side-lines being looked at by Plus Two includes selling mail order hair products. One salon in Accrington is being remodelled to include an expanded hair extension service featuring a coffee bar area.
