A NURSE cycled 1,000 miles to raise £1,000 for the East Lancashire Hospice and Christie's Hospital which cared for his mother.
Nigel Barnes, 37, decided to raise the cash after his mother died twelve months ago.
He got in training for his marathon ride by cycling from his home at Dale View, Blackburn, to his job in Burnley General Hospital every day, then warmed up with a 60-mile sponsored ride with Blackburn and District Mountain Bike Club.
The ride from Manchester to Blackpool raised £300 and whetted his appetite for a 950-mile tour from John O'Groats to Land's End which raised another £700. He said: "The first couple of days were tough but then I hardened up to it."
He cycled for about seven hours a day for two weeks in September, staying in youth hostels every night.
The cash was split between the two charities and he presented a cheque for the East Lancashire Hospice Appeal to fundraisers at Rossendale Hospice, the temporary home of the Blackburn hospice.
