THE North West deserves its own regional assembly, a Labour backbencher has claimed.
Austin Mitchell says a majority of people in the region and the North East want regional government.
In the wake of devolution for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and London, he said public support for the idea was growing.
He said: "Life is increasingly lived on a regional basis. Our people want to be heard and they want government brought closer to them."
The great Grimsby MP said the North West, the North East and Yorkshire and Humberside deserved the same independence from Westminster as the Scots, Welsh, Irish and Londoners.
He said: "The British constitution is now unbalanced and something must be done to build counterbalancing forces in England and break the bottleneck of London."
