READERS may have noticed a spate of bridge rebuilding in and around Pendle in recent months. The river bridge on Philips Lane, Colne, is being done now. The one in the centre of Barley was rebuilt in the summer. And, before that, it was the turn of the Laneshawbridge to Haworth moorland route past the Herders Inn.
Before these works were carried out, these bridges had weight limits, as these are all on either narrow country lanes or residential streets a seven ton weight limit would seem like an excellent idea.
So why was this work carried out by a county council highways department (funded from your council tax) which never seems to have enough funds to fill in potholes?
It is no surprise that this is a requirement from Brussels. Under their rules, all bridges are supposed to carry 44-ton Euro-juggernauts and we have to pay for it.
When the residents of Philips Lane, Laneshawbridge and Barley pay their council tax while their houses are shaken by heavy trucks, I hope they remember to blame the EU.
The sooner we resign from this crazy Euro-club the better.
