LANCASHIRE is gearing up for an unprecedented year of sporting events and openings at the very time that the British Tourist Authority is promoting Britain as one of the world's major 'sports tourism' destinations.
Building on recent sporting successes such as the Olympics and Test Cricket, Lancashire is gearing up to be top of the 2001 sporting 'leader board' with the British Open Golf Championships, which takes place at Royal Lytham & St Annes in July which will bring thousands of visitors in to the county.
Close behind in visitor pulling-power will be the new £12 million National Football Museum at Preston, which is due to open in March, and is expected to be a major attraction among the 10 million-plus football fans in Britain.
Throughout the year other Lancashire's sporting attractions will generate hundreds of new visitors to the county, including cycling in the Ribble Valley, sea fishing off the Fylde coast and dry slope skiing at Rossendale.
There is even a World Championships in the form of the World Tractor Pulling Finals in Great Eccleston, Wyre in August!
