BUSINESSES are being warned about a bogus crime prevention company trying to get money for drug leaflets for schools.
Four companies in the Burnley and Colne area have contacted the crime prevention department at Pennine Division to complain about a male caller from a 'crime prevention' company.
Crime Prevention Officer PC Dave Sykes said: "The man says that his firm contacted the company in September when they agreed to sponsor a drugs brochure and he is ringing to confirm the order and which school should benefit.
"Then he asks the business for a cheque for £199, but when they questioned him further he rang off and when they checked 1471 the caller had withheld his number."
PC Sykes said several publishing companies do run schemes of this nature, but they contact companies by letter, always give a name and usually send out an example of the brochure before arranging for payment.
He said: "Legitimate callers are always willing to give names and addresses. This is nothing to do with the police in this area."
The man is described as very eloquent, aged about 35 to 40 years and with a southern accent.
If anyone receives a call of this nature they are advised to contact the crime prevention office on 01282 472187.
