ANTI-SOCIAL street drinking could be banned in Leigh town centre in April.
It is a hoped that a new by-law will bring an end to problems on the civic square and in the parish church gardens which came to a head on Friday October 13 when a gang of 50 drinkers let off rockets outside the library.
An area has now been defined and proposed for the Leigh Town Centre Alcohol By-Law. If approved by the Home Office the area affected stretches along the Atherton bypass, including Asda and B and Q, comes down to the Parsonage Retail Park and crosses the town centre as far as the Chapel Street Police Station.
Town centre co-ordinator Laurie Barton said: "It is hoped that the bylaw will help to control problems encountered in parts of the town centre such as on the town hall square."
