Blackburn Rovers winger Damien Duff has been cleared of any involvement in a nightclub incident which led to claims that a man had been assaulted.
Martin Coad, 19, of Clayton-le-Moors, contacted the Lancashire Evening Telegraph last week and said he had been assaulted at Utopia nightclub early on Thursday.
Nightclub officials confirmed Rovers players had been in the club but Blackburn Rovers chief executive John Williams said today: "Graeme Souness has spoken with Damien Duff, who vehemently denies the allegation, which we now understand has been withdrawn."
A spokesman for Blackburn police said: "The verbal allegation of assault has now been formally retracted."
