THE Darwen Against Demolition campaign deserves a great big thank you. All their hard work has finally paid off and the old Tech, now has a secure future.
Lancashire County Council wanted to demolish the building. They didn't bother to consult any of the residents of Darwen, local groups or the Civic Society. They just wanted to flatten an important piece of Darwen's history.
Within hours of finding out, a campaign group was formed and battle commenced. Within two weeks the county council relented and the demolition notice was withdrawn.
After six years of campaigning, work has finally commenced and this well-loved building will be brought back to life.
My heartfelt thanks go out to all the people who have been involved with this campaign, but surely the final words should go to our local campaigning councillor Derek Brindle.
He has kept people informed about all the highs and lows of this majestic building. In 1994, he said everything possible would be done to save the old Tech and now, after six years, it has finally happened.
Well done Derek.
