POLICE are urging people to beware of handing money over to workmen who call without an appointment and then say they have found work that needs doing.
The warning comes after an elderly woman from Kenyons Lane, Haydock, was conned out of her life savings by three men who told her she needed guttering work doing. She agreed to the work but was then forced to pay them £3,500.
The three men, who drove a white transit van with 'Johnsons Plastics' and a mobile telephone number on the side, all spoke with Irish accents and were wearing overalls. Two were in their 20s and slim while the third was stockier and between 40 and 45.
Detective Sergeant Steve Lowe, of St Helens Police, said: "Never agree to have work carried out by someone just calling round on the off-chance.
"Always make appointments with people before accepting quotes and always get more than one quote."
