WE should join Lord Smith and Wigan Council in supporting Holocaust Day tomorrow. Six million Jews from across Europe were killed in the Nazi's final solution during the Second World War. But it is not just that black episode in history which we should remember. Since the mass extermination of the Jewish people who had lived peacefully in Europe for centuries, there have been many more genocides across the world such as in Africa and the former Yugoslavia. Holocaust Memorial Day marking the 56th anniversary since the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, must make us all stop and think. As it has been said, it only takes the good people to stand by and do nothing for evil to triumph.
We'll drink to that!
EVEN the most ardent teetotaller can't help but raise a glass to toast the success of the beer "monsters" who have made the annual Bent and Bongs beer bash a mammoth success. Since 1990 organisers, sponsors and, of course, the paying public have backed the event to the tune of over £70,000 -- money which has gone to deserving charities. This year's event is under way and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Let's drink to its continued success.
