LEIGH town centre manager Laurie Barton has stepped in to save a major event for Leigh after it had appeared doomed. Ms Barton has secured a grant of £5,000 from the Coalfield Challenge fund and £2,000 from the town centre management fund to rescue the highly successful Streets Ahead festival.
The cash had not been found to put on the Streets Ahead festival -- which attracted thousands to Leigh town centre last spring -- and it was not due to go ahead this year. But thanks to the £7,000 injection of money, which should attract more funding, the event can now be staged. It will be renamed Maydaze and is to be staged on May Bank Holiday, on Sunday, May 27. The festival, of street entertainers, musicians and puppet shows, will be in Wigan on Saturday May 26 and Oldham on May 28.
