UNION man and London councillor Ian Wingfield, 41, has joined Labour's parliamentary candidature race for the Leigh constituency.
Cheshire-born Mr Wingfield, who lives in Peckham, has been a councillor in Southwark since 1989, chief whip since 1990 and a cabinet member from 2000.
He was in 1992 Parliamentary candidate in Chislehurst and four years later prospective Parliamentary candidate in Wirral South.
He has been national political officer of the Communication Workers Union since 1988 and instigated modernisation of its political structure and is also an active regional member of GMB.
For 10 years Mr Wingfield has been a member of the Association of London Government and whip/secretary since 1994.
He has been a member of the Labour Party since 1979 and is a member of the Co-operative Party, Socialist Educational Association, Socialist Health Association & Christian Socialist Movement.
He has attended Labour North-West regional conferences since 1988 and acted as trainer and facilitator at regional schools. He says he is keenly interested in raising educational standards.
A voluntary Parliamentary researcher for Derby North MP Bob Laxton, Mr Wingfield has helped shape manifestos for Westminster, European and local elections.
Born and educated in Chester he is engaged to be married.
He gained his doctorate from Imperial College where he lectured in industrial sociology.
