AN ecologically-sound toilet has been built in Oswaldtwistle -- and it's made from straw.

The loo is the latest project from Oswaldtwistle Prospects Panel, an organisation which tries to enhance the area.

Along with volunteers from across East Lancashire, they built the straw bale building over the weekend at Tinker Brook Tree Nursery.

It will house a disabled toilet for use by the people who have plots of land at Tinker Brook.

The project was organised by the the panel and CommuniCare to complement the community tree nursery and food-growing projects.

Construction work was supervised by Barbara Jones, a straw bale expert from Todmorden Nails, who is world-renowned for her straw creations.

The straw building will replace a portable toilet.

A spokesman for the panel said: "The current toilet is expensive to run and uses chemicals which are harmful to the environment.

"In the long term, this toilet will benefit the environment and our budget."
