BURY police now have access to a new computer system containing more than five million sets of fingerprints from around the UK.
The National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) has already helped to identify more than 25,000 people from prints left at crime scenes in England and Wales.
The centralised database can reveal a suspect's identity and criminal record in minutes. The previous system could take weeks to make an identification.
