PRESTON boss David Moyes is hoping striker Brian McBride can repeat his international show and get on the scoresheet for North End.

The American scored at the weekend in his country's 2-1 friendly victory over China in California.

He is yet to break his duck in his loan spell at Deepale, his six month stay hampered by a three month lay-off, but Moyes is confident the goal will come soon.

"He scored a good goal for America -- that's four in four internationals -- and we know he is capable of that. He is a good finisher, an excellent player and good in the air. Most of the Preston supporters have spoken to says he plays with a good attitude.

"Brian played three games before his injury and since he has been back we have not played well. I can't think Brian has missed any real chances since his return. It's down to our overall play."

The 29-year-old's loan spell is over in March but Moyes, whose side are currently going through a mini-crisis after five successive defeats, would like to make it a permanent deal.

"I'd love to bring Brian to the club on a permanent basis. I will have to talk to the MSL but he is classed as one of the biggest stars in America and it would certainly cost a lot of money. But it is something I would like to do and something I will look at nearer the time."

And North End could be increasing their international links with the addition of Jason Bent, who has been at Deepdale on trial from his MSL club Colorado Rapids.

They have applied for a work permit and expect to hear this week but, although Canada are 65th in the FIFA World Rankings and Bent has played their last 20 games, it is assessed over the last two years, pushing Canada down to 76th and meaning the permit could be refused.

"We will appeal to the Department of Education and Employment if necessary," said Moyes, whose side have not played First Division football for three weeks but have been to Scotland for two friendly games.

"Jason has done all I have asked for. He has played in Scotland at full-back and in midfield and done quite well.

"We would like to offer him a permanent contract, have a look at him as he is on a Bosman."

"He is quick, can play in a couple of positions and looked capable on the ball. He would be a good addition to the squad and is another full international.

"I've asked Brian about him as he has come in contact with him and we're hoping to have some joy with the work permit."

Meanwhile Preston have a doubt over goalkeeper David Lucas for Saturday's trip to Portsmouth after he sprained his finger in training yesterday.
