ONE hundred concerned villagers attended a public meeting about a proposed housing development in Weir, Rossendale.
They crowded into the Central Methodist Church Hall, Bacup, where they were given details of the planned 42-house scheme on the former Irwell Springs mill site.
One of the key concerns voiced at the meeting involved fears about increased traffic and access from Burnley Road into Heald Lane.
Concerns were also expressed about the possible loss of one or more of the three small reservoirs in the site. It was said they were used by anglers and also helped to attract wildlife to the area. General fears were also expressed about the possible loss of wildlife and damage to the environment. Ward councillor Judith Driver said: "The application for outline planning permission will go to the planning meeting for consideration on February 19.
"I expect from what was said at last night's meeting that perhaps 30-40 local people will go along.
"They remain opposed to the proposed development.
"As a member of the planning committee I can assure them that I and other members will certainly take their views into consideration when coming to a decision."
