TOURISM in East Lancashire provides more than 4,000 jobs and is worth £120million, it was revealed yesterday.
County Councillor Ian Ormerod, chairman of tourism on Lancashire County Council, announced the figures at the launch of the latest edition of Lancashire's Hill Country, a 36-page newspaper highlighting visitor attractions and facilities, produced by the Lancashire Evening Telegraph on behalf of the East Lancashire Partnership's Tourism Unit. The launch was at Helmshore Textile Museum.
Coun Ormerod said: "A lot of people don't realise that 25 per cent of our county is designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty. There are now 350,000 visitor nights spent in this area every year."
Evening Telegraph editor Kevin Young attended the launch, along with the managing director of Newsquest Lancashire, Brenda Rudge. Mr Young said: "This is a very important project to us - much more than just a special publication. We are proud to be part of something which is helping to create jobs."
