I WAS pleased to read (LET, January 10) that Stan Ternent, the Burnley manager, has signed three new players -- Branchy, Mooro and Payts -- and then realised that he was referring to Branch, Moore and Payton.
The next day, he referred to Brian Law as Lawsy.
This shortening and lengthening of names, particularly in the sporting world, occurred during infant school. Probably, Stan has not grown out of his infant learnings.
I also observed that Andy Neild has had the same schooling as Stan Ternent as he refers to Blackburn Rovers manager as Souey.
Surely, two extra letters to complete Souness would not take valuable space.
