Lancaster City 1 Barrow 0 LANCASTER City remain on course to retain the Unibond League Cup after a closely fought victory against Barrow at the Axe on Tuesday night.

City dominated the first half and, although Barrow came into the game later on, they just about deserved the victory thanks to another Chris Ward strike.

City started well with Colin Potts busy on the right wing and on 25 minutes the breakthrough came. Haddow picked up a loose ball after sloppy play in midfield and set Ward clear. City's top scorer nudged the ball round the advancing keeper before comfortably slotting home.

City continued to dominate with Mayers getting a foot in and orchestrating play from the back.

A Barrow defender almost made it two after a flowing move involving Kilbane, Potts, Welch, and Haddow, but his header came back off the bar.

Kenny Lowe, a half time sub for Barrow, helped to turn things round.

Though Citys lead seemed slender as Barrow created a number of openings, they never seriously tested Thornley. The closest they came was a deep cross that bizarrely struck the City bar.

Headers from Welch and Ward could and should have put the game beyond Barrow. City now face Workington with a 100 per cent record.
